Pvt. Henry R. Prestage enlisted into the United States Army on 30 June 1944 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi and was discharged 4 January 1946. While in service he was a heavy machine gunner and transferred to the motor pool.

Upon his discharge, Pvt. Prestage hitch-hiked back home where he learned that his prized farming mules were sold. Undeterred, he began to work for the local Ford Dealership. Afterwards, he was a successful businessman selling produce to individuals and small country stores throughout the state of Mississippi.
